Commercial and Yachts

I am an experienced, professional, Master Mariner with twenty five years of seagoing experience on ships and yachts of various sizes.   As my resume states I currently hold my AMSA Master Class 1, and Marine Engine Driver Grade 2.  

My work history includes being a Pilot with Darwin Ports Corporation, Captain in the North Sea on wind farm supply vessels, Yacht Captain, deck officer in the Shell LNG fleet and Chief Mate with Farstad offshore fleet and P&O Polar Aurora Australis, Navigator and MCDO in the Royal Australian Navy.  All positions over the past two decades have been senior roles requiring a strong company focus and consideration to confidential nature of communication and policy.

Having been around the maritime environment my entire life, I have experience on a range of vessels in many varied environments. I have worked my way to Master unlimited from small vessels and so have excellent ship handling skills.  Change in technology is always embraced and I am enthusiastic about learning how to best use the latest technology for improved performance.  I have considerable experience manoeuvring and controlling various propulsion combinations including fixed, CPP, ASD, Z Drive, and Jets. I have experience in a variety of DP systems, specialising in Rolls Royce and Kongsberg. 

I am accustomed to building strong working relationships with people at all levels and appreciate the P&O Maritime values and behaviour expectations.  I have good interpersonal communication skills and I am comfortable liaising with employees, clients, management, agents and other personnel of all nationalities to achieve excellent results for all concerned.  I am business focused and will support P&O MaritimeP&O MARITIMEP&O MARITIME in their strategic objectives and will work with your team to achieve the best results possible.  In addition to my numerous maritime qualifications, I have a Bachelor of Science from UNSW with a major in Oceanography.

Throughout my career I have always enjoyed cargo operations, anchor handling, navigation and berthing/unberthing vessels and I take pride in my ship handling ability.  I am always interested in vessel maneuvering characteristics and I enjoy learning from others experience to continue to develop my skills.

Working with Incat Tasmania I have project managed and commissioned twelve High Speed Craft (HSc) from 35m to 112m.  I have been commissioning master in charge of sea trials and delivery for all Incat vessels.  These roles have required minimal supervision from the company while managing over 50 staff to meet contract deadlines, deliver a quality product with consideration to budget in a safe and effective manner.  To enable the conduct of sea trials on the Derwent River I have been awarded my Tasports Pilotage exemption for 130m vessels.

During my career, I have gained a solid background in budgeting, logistics, warranty management, maintenance claims, stakeholder and contractor management believe I have a solid commercial and business acumen that has been displayed to a high level in my project management experience that balances customer relationships with profit and commercial demands.  Throughout my career I have displayed excellent decision making and judgement skills and the ability to stay calm and decisive even when under pressure in high stress environments. I am meticulous in planning, time management and organisation. 

Over the years I have acted in all positions onboard vessels and my experience as master around the world proving my ability to manage vessels and crew in a team environment regardless of various cultural and language backgrounds. 

In 2011/12 I trained up and led a team of amateurs to race around the world and win the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.  This win and other professional accomplishments display my excellent team building, relationship building, strong interpersonal skills, motivational skills and networking skills as well as through planning and problem solving.

I have substantial experience in industrial environments, management and logistics, with an excellent understanding of the requirements of shipping laws, ISPS, ISM, HSE, OH&S, MARPOL environmental risks and hazards, with a dedicated commitment to safe working procedures and risk assessment.  I have good knowledge of local and national legislative requirements from years of working in Australian waters, with sound experience in administrative processes and procedures including excellent computer skills and ability to utilise Microsoft Office, and navigation software.
